Fendalton IV

The perfect blending of old & new

When the objective is perfection, every single step along the way must be perfect too. That was the challenge we accepted with this landmark renovation of a family home in Fendalton.

The existing home was a substantial 1940s weatherboard two-storey house with a separate garage. The owners and their teenage family loved the original house and its location, but it was clear that having extra living space would add immensely to their enjoyment of their home.

The scope of the renovation

Within the significantly enlarged footprint, new interior and exterior living spaces were expanded and added. The new living room features a vaulted ceiling with overlight windows to capture more light. A fabulous outdoor space beyond French doors is protected by retractable louvres at both ends, and warmed by a wood fire, for year-round entertaining. A walk-in pantry was added to the existing kitchen, and a new mudroom and laundry were incorporated into the ground-floor extension along the north wall. Upstairs from the new, and now conveniently attached three-car garage, is a large family rumpus room, bedroom and ensuite.

Achieving all that required moving and removing a number of walls and installing large structural steel beams. Happily, projects like this are where Sam’s experience and attention to detail come into their own.

Perfection every step of the way

Older houses naturally move and go out of alignment as they age, which means renovations and additions can come with unique challenges. At each step along the way our aim was the seamless integration of new materials with old. So despite the age difference between the original dwelling and the new construction, the marriage between the two is perfect.

Go with the flow

One of many things that strikes visitors to this beautiful home is the feeling of flow from the entrance way to the living spaces of the house. As you walk through it really does seem like the house was built like this from the beginning. Turn left and stunning steel and glass doors invite you into the kitchen and dining area, while ahead of you are the stairs to the garage wing, garage access, and utility rooms all accessed from a hallway flooded with light from a custom-built skylight.

Finishing touches

The interior decoration and furnishings were all our client’s work and are a testament to her exquisite taste and flair for interior design. In particular, we love special features like the scalloped feature wall in the entrance hall, which is mirrored under the kitchen benchtop. A new roof and fastidious interior and exterior paintwork completed this superb renovation.
